2009 STLP Showcase

by Alexa Chestnut

With the use of the imagination, anything is possible. This was proven true at the 2009 STLP Showcase held at Northern Kentucky University. A wide range of projects were shown at the conference.

It was obvious that the participants were determined and had spent time on their projects. Some projects contained web pages and some contained projectors with slide shows or video clips. When it came to judging time, the participants of the showcase were on their toes, hoping that their projects were the best, and that they were going to win.

The students from the Northern Kentucky area were anxious and determined to win. They came prepared and had all the knowledge in the world about their project. There were a selective few projects that deserve special mention.

The A is for AIDS project, by Carroll County, was the most heartfelt and enlightening there. "We are spreading the word, not the disease." One of the students, Levi has a aunt that is living in Uganda. It was a very special opportunity to be able to witness a live web cam chat with her. She told of the people of Uganda's living styles and how AIDS has taken over their lives. Imagine being there watching as people die from a disease you want so badly to end, but can't.

Another project that stood out was Rally for a Cure, by Owen County. The young lady presenting said that her inspiration for the project was knowing someone with cancer. She was inspired to start a rally in Owen County to raise money to help find a cure.

The 2009 Showcase held at NKU was both inspiring and enlightening. It was truly a privilege to be able to witness so many kids determined to help man kind, or help others at their school, or just being able to see kids wanting to learn, that was a privilege.

The Best Of 2009: STLP Regional Competition

By: MacKenzie Hammond

In December of 2009, I was lucky enough to attend the STLP Regional Competition at Northern Kentucky University. The event, which featured schools from around Northern Kentucky, taught me more than I thought could be learned in a single day. From how Facebook can help bring awareness to AIDS and elementary students can help stop the spread of the flu, it was evident that people in my age divison are driven, and more than willing to use Technology to draw attention to their cause.

A For AIDS

It’s odd to find high school students in Northern Kentucky who are working to prevent AIDS in foreign countries but students from Campbell County High School are doing just that. They are using social networking sites that fellow classmates and people all over the world use on a daily basis, Facebook and Skype to help “spread the word, not the disease.” They use the web cam website Skype.com to upload a video with an aide worker in Africa working to help prevent AIDS, then upload the video to Facebook so all of their friends and family, and even people they don’t know from around the world can see it. Levi, Axel, Briana, and Thomas created A for AIDS with the help of Thomas’ cousin who is in Africa and was on the other end of Skype at the presentation. This presentation was visually appealing, informative, and just all around interesting. A for AIDS get’s an A+ in my book.

Elementary Students Help Stop The Spread Of Season And Swine Flu

“What kind of bug is going around?
It’s the germs germs germs no more.
No more germs we are here to learn
Let me tell you this is what to do
So you don’t get the flue
And keep you from feeling blue
This is what you should do
Lose the germs, germs, no more germs.
No more germs, we’re here to learn.”

Students at Mildred Dean Elementary School used this creative poem and others like it to teach younger students how to prevent the spread of the flu. With the assistance of Microsoft PowerPoint, they created a slide show presentation to help students visually remember these tips. The schools mascot, the hornets, also helped students remember these tips; phrases like “Bee healthy” and photos of cartoon likes bees covered the schools exhibit. The use of PowerPoint was creative and visually appealing. I believe these students are the next wave of pediatricians if they still have this passion when they enter college.

Jones Middle School STLP Takes Flight

The students at Jones Middle School must get tired of bad behavior. These girls created a video using the theme Jets (Jets, Exhibit, Safe behavior, Take responsibility, Show respect) to demonstrate approiate hallway behavior. I was amazed by the quality of this video and the amount of skill that goes into making a video that is overwhelmingly good. The girls also used a form of Claymation, clay and animation techniques to create a clay model and video which was aviable to see in person along with the video. These girls plan on continuing there video making through-out the school year and to make videos focusing on cafeteria and restroom behavior. Hopefully their program takes flight and continues to soar for years to come!

Think Pink

Facebook, a place for friends, but did you also know it can be a place for information, on breast cancer? Carroll County High School students did their research on breast cancer and in hopes of spreading this information, took to Facebook. They created a support and information group on the social networking site, which is open to anyone on Facebook. Their pink and green exhibit was eye appealing and catching the attention of many people, including myself, and they hope to do that with the students at their own school. In addition to spreading awareness through the internet, they plan to organize a “Hat Day” in which students pay a dollar to wear their favorite hat all day, and the group plans on donating the profits to the Susan G. Komen breast cancer foundation. It’s great to see people taking such an important cause to the internet and saving lives with it.

Being a daily user of technology I was amazed by how far it could go, and how many people it could really connect with. Having the pleasure of going to the regional STLP competition was eye opening, and the things I learned were timeless. I had the pleasure of meeting so many young people, who were so selfless, and were more than willing to take time out of their day to prepare their exhibits. I couldn’t imagine a better way to spend my Friday afternoon than learning about things so simple as which way to walk in the hallway, and complicated as breast cancer and AIDS, nor could I imagine a better way of keeping STLP programs alive and thriving in schools around the state.

Read Beyond Reality @your library during Teen Read Week 2009

Area teens will be reading for the fun of it as Simon Kenton High School celebrates Teen Read Week, October 18-24, 2009. They join thousands of other libraries, schools and bookstores across the country who are encouraging teens to celebrate this year's theme, "Read Beyond Reality @ your library." Teen Read Week is the national adolescent literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the fastest-growing division of the American Library Association. This year's theme encourages teens to read a wide variety of materials that are out of this world, just for the fun of it.

"Today's teens seem to have less and less free time, and there are increasingly more activities for them to take part in during what little leisure time they have," said Mrs. Moore SK librarian. "That is why it's important to encourage teens to set aside some time to read."

Studies show a regular reading habit increases reading proficiency, and SK librarian Toni Moore agrees. "One of the most important ways teens acquire the habit is by watching adults they respect" says Mrs. Moore.

Being around adults who are avid readers can counteract the latest statistics from The Nations Report Card , which indicated that in homes across America the number of different types of reading materials has decreased, and a similar percentage of seventeen-year-olds saw adults reading in their homes.

Parents of teens are encouraged to celebrate Teen Read Week at home. Mrs Moore offers these ideas:
  • Visit the public or school library with your teen to attend a program or to check out books.
  • set aside time each night for the family to read.
  • Give books or magazine subscriptions to your teen as a gift or reward.
  • Share your favorite book with your teen.
  • Surf the web with your teen to learn about new books or authors. A good place to start is YALSA's Booklist's page.
  • Join a book discussion group at the school or public library.

Teen Read Week is held annually during the third week of October. An updated sponsors and supporting organizations list can be found at the web site, www.ala.org/teenread.

Untitled?

Lucy is a vampire, but not in the traditional sense. She has a theory that untreated Diabetics long a ago were the basis for the folklore that led to today's Vampire stories. Being a Diabetic herself, this has altered her view of the world and herself. But When her friend introduces her to an older man who claims to be a stereotypical vampire himself an takes an almost frightening interest in Lucy She doesn't know what to do. A quick shock from her very deluded world into a very dangerous one.

I liked this book. Her theory was interesting, it's kind of believable. And the Aouther captured that jaded teen goth persona really well.

Of Sound Mind

Theo's family is deaf. His mother is an artist who cares more about sculpting than catering to family life. And Theo is basically the family interpreter. By his senior year he is emotionally drained so when he meets Ivy, a girl with a deaf father who can sign as well he avoids her. And she resents his attitude but wants to be his friend because she is sure he would understand her. But at school a teacher blind to the situation makes them partners on everything and eventually they become very close.

This book is a tear jerker, you really develop sympathy for Theo and for Ivy and Her Father. And the story gives you almost a sense of a small sign-language culture, which is interesting.

Anthem, by Ayn Rand

This book takes place is a future, cult-like society were the main focus of everyone's existence is the welfare of the group. The people are controlled right down to the very last detail in their lives. And the main character wants so badly to be a scholar, but is told he's worthy of being no more than a street-sweeper. When he and another man discover an ancient subway tube and the light bulbs within, he begins to defy his masters, and when he recovers the power of electricity lost centuries prior, he is sentenced to death.

This novel, written by a clearly very intelligent author, in a very interesting and creative point of view goes so far as to offer up to readers a new philosophy for one's view of the world, although not one I would adopt for myself I was really amazed by it. It seems like the story line itself is just a cradle for the style of thinking Rand is trying to get across.

Harry Potter: The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter: The Tales of Beedle the Bard, by J.K. Rowling, is an extraordinary book for any long time Harry fan. It doesn't give any particular insight into the life and stories of Harry Potter but it does give insight into some wizard culuture. In addition, Dumbuldore gives his thoughts on all the stories at the end of each. The book is made up of five short, old, wizard fairy tales, each with their own morale. The tales consist of "The Wizard and the Hopping Pot," "The Fountain of Fair Fortune," "The Warlock's Hairy Heart," "Babbitty Rabbitty and Her Cackling Stump," and "The Tale of the Three Brothers" , which is also mentioned in "Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows." The book is great and it is short so it is perfect for anyone that needs to get a quick Harry fix.

This Strange New Feeling- Julius Lester

This book takes place in the 1800's during slave times. It helps the reader understand slavery from an anti-slavery, white man's point of view. The main character, Ras, is close to the master of his home plantation. However, he is very sneaky. It turns out he somehow knows the plantation guards are secretly against slavery. He knows how to talk them into helping them escape. As you read, you will find yourself rooting for Ras and his long-time love, Sally as they try to make their escape. - KASEY TURNER

Dark at the Roots

Dark at the Roots is about a girl who is a pathological liar. Even from childhood she just can't seem to keep the truth straight from the stories she tells everyone in her life. Born into a very crowded, very dysfunctional family that's always moving, Sara grows up without any long term friends and is always scheming up ways to gain social acceptance at a new location.

I think this book is interesting because in reality, Sara wouldn't be a very attractive or endearing person. but as the book goes you find yourself willing her shady tactics to work.

The Rescue- Nicholas Sparks

This is a book that will tug on your heart strings! From the very beginning, you find yourself feeling sorry for the single mother of a mentally challenged boy. She has a lot on her plate, especially moving to a new town. She has no family and no friends, literally. However, after a bad accident and the search for her little boy, she falls madly in love, gains a mother figure and a few friends. I was so into this book, I finished it faster than any other. Enjoy. - KASEY TURNER

What-the-Dickens- Gregory Mcguire-- Amanda Knotts

This was an interesting book by the author of Wicked. It's about an orphan tooth fairy who is just trying to find his purpose in our world. His story is told by a young man who is looking after his young cousins during a severe storm. This was a cute story and a short book, I would reccomend it to anyone who is just looking for a good read.

The Hobbit- J.R.R. Tolkein-- Amanda Knotts

This was one of the best books I have ever read. I loved that it was full of adventure, magic, and trouble around every corner. This book is about a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins who is tricked into being a "burglar" for a group of dwarves. He turns out to be braver than he thought and becomes well respected despite his small size and hairless face in presense of the heavily bearded dwarves. I would (and probably will) read this book several times again because it's such an exciting fantasy epic. I would reccomend this to anyone, especially those who enjoyed the "Lord of the Rings" movies or novels.

The Golden Compass- Philip Pullman-- Amanda Knotts

This book was wonderful and I enjoyed it very much. It's about a young girl who gets swept up in between the war between her mother's work and her father's. She ends up following her father into another world completely different to her own and, with her daemon, starts a wonderful adventure.

Evermore (The Immortals)- Alyson Noel-- Nicole Webster

Ever was a normal teenage girl until the crash. Her whole family was killed besides her. Ever since then Ever has been able to see and talk to the ghost of her little sister and has been able to read the minds of others. That was until she met Damen. For some reason she just can't read him, which makes him even more irresistable to her. Why can't she read him? What secrets is he hiding? This book is about love and hate. I loved it. I would definitely advise others to read it.

Frogs and French Kisses- Sarah Mlynowski-- Nicole Webster

This book is the sequel to Bras and Broomsticks. Rachel is back to being a nobody and Miri feels bad, so tries to put a love spell on Raf (the guy of Rachel's dreams.) By mistake, the spell gets put on Will, Raf's older brother. Will Rachel settle with Will? Will she just forget about Raf? How will Will loving Rachel affect her popularity? Frogs and French Kisses is a great book. There are many twists and ups and downs. I know whoever reads this will love this novel.

Bras and Broomsticks- Sarah Mlynowski-- Nicole Webster

Have you ever wished you were magic? POOF! and the guy you like wants you and you are the most popular girl in school? Rachel can have both of those things and more. No, Rachel is not a witch, but her mom and sister are! Rachel uses Miri (her sister) to get all the things she has ever wanted. But as Rachel's mom says, "All magic has consequences." This novel is very entertaining. I just couldn't put the book down! =)

Guyaholic- Carolyn Mackler-- Nicole Webster

Vivienne Valentine is a 17 year old girl who just can't seem to find a guy and stick with him. She lives with her grandparents because her mom just can't seem to stay in one place, she is always traveling. Vivienne goes to a party with Sam. Sam is V's newest attraction, but she's not sure if she is ready for commitment. She gets drunk and hooks up with another guy! When V's mom ditches her once again, V decides to drive down to where her mom is staying in Texas. She figures this trip will help her forget Sam. How will this 5 day long trip go? Who will V meet along the way and will this get Sam off her mind? I really enjoyed this book and think other girls should read it. =)

Twilight Review

I've tried writing a professional(ish) and detached review of the Twilight "saga". However, I can't. I just get too "excited" about writing the review.

So, I am going to put this as simply as possible so my feelings are clear..... I hate the Twilight Series.... no no, I REALLY HATE the Twilight series. Bella annoys me, Edward is a jerk, and Jacob needs to stop being so needy. I don't find any of the characters fascinating, only to be flat, underdeveloped characters. I don't like the way Meyer writes, because she has no talent in it. I didn't bother reading the fourth (is it Breaking Dawn?) Well, I am finished. Thanks for reading.

Fleshmarket

Nicola Morgan’s Fleshmarket, is a tale about a male adolescent and his younger sister trying to survive in the slums of 1822 Edinburgh, Scotland. It starts off with a flash back from when protagonist Robbie was a small child and his mother had to have surgery. The man who performed surgery on Robbie’s mother, Dr. Robert Knox, will affect Robbie for the rest of his life. Robbie becomes obsessed with the thought of revenge on the man he holds responsible for the death of his mother and the demise of his family. In his obsession he looses sight of what really matters to him, his little sister Essie whom he must take care of due to his father’s prolonged absence and alcoholism, and becomes involved with two fiends Burke and Hare. Along the way to his revenge Robbie falls into a web of lies and crime in effort to bring him closer to Dr. Knox. This only sets him further away from Essie and his true self. However Robbie is introduced to a young medical student, by Essie, that makes an effort to bring Robbie back down to earth. Will Robbie do what his right and put his family first, or will he be further skewed by the wicked ways of Burke and Hare in his quest for revenge. Fleshmarket was a great book and I recommend it to anyone looking for a short book full of suspense.

Dragon's Keep- Carey Janet Lee-- Amanda Knotts

This was a fun book to read, taking place in a medival time period. A princess was born with a dragon claw that no one knows about but her mother. She knows there's a prophecy that says she'll stop a great war with the wave of her hand, but she can't even begin to guess what war it will be. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a fun adventure and likes dragons.

Marley and Me- John Grogran-- Amanda Knotts

I absolutely loved this book, even more than I loved the movie. It gave more attention to detail, more stories about the things Marley did and he even reminded me of my dog a little bit. Reading this story, you'll laugh, you may cry, and sometimes you'll laugh so hard you cry. I recommend this book to anyone who has seen or wants to see the movie because it explains some things that you overlook in the movie. I also recommend it to anyone who just wants to laugh at a crazy dog and admire how he brought a family together.

Untamed- PC and Kristen Cast-- Amanda Knotts

This book was full of surprises and scary creatures and spooky moments. Broken hearts, fakers, and friends sticking together in the end. Zoey and her enemy/ally grow an even stronger bond in this book and Aphrodite even seems to be loosening up and letting Zoey's friends in her circle. This was a wonderful book, but remember the words of Nyx, "Darkness does not always equate to evil, just as light does not always bring good." This series would be great for anyone who liked Twilight, or those who didn't, as well.

Chosen- PC and Kristen Cast-- Amanda Knotts

The third book in the "House of Night" series was as good as the rest and kept me at the edge of my seat. Zoey tries to find a way to get her "undead dead" best friend's humanity back. She finally succeeds after she listened to her goddess's advice, and Stevie Rae is once again herself... sort of. I reccomend this wonderful book to those who love small adventures and some romance.

Betrayed PC and Kristen Cast

Zoey's best friend dieas and somehow comes "back to life." The only way to save her is to beomce allies with the enemy, Aphrodite. Neferet, Zoey's mentor and the high priestess begins acting very strange. Zoey juggles three boyfriends while trying to fix the undead/dead Stevie Rae. This was a good book, and I couldn't wait to read the next one. I would reccomend it to anyone who has read the first one.

Amanda Knott

Marked by DC and Kristen Cast

This book (first of many) was written by a mother and her daughter together, which makes the book better. The daughter, who is in college, provies a younger influence. She gives the main character, Zoey, a more accurate and current teenage mind. The mother's input provides a more mature and weathered air to the adults. I find that the two create a balanced book. The setting takes place outside Tulsa, Oklahoma, where a young girl gets married as a vampyre and sent to "The House of Night." The House of Night is a school where fledgling vampyres attend classes that teach them house to cope with the changes their body and mind will make such as blood lust, sleeping during the day, night vision, etc.... Zoey finds out she's special soon after she's marked when the vampyre goddess Nyx pays her a visit. Zoey must learn to deal with the becoming a vampyre, making new friends, making several enemies, and being special. This was certainly different from the Twilight saga, but I was ready to read more when I was done. I would tell many people to read this book.

Amanda Knotts

Damaged by Cathy Glass

Damagaed is the story of a young girl who's life has been hell from birth. She's raped and abused by the people who are supposed to love and care for her most. After 8 years of the ongoing trama, she's rescued by social services and is ordered in foster care. Jodie is a very damaged little girl who needs more help than almost humanly possible. But Cathy Glass, an experienced foster carer with children of her own, is up for the challenge. Will she be able to help Jodie back into a normal life? Will she be able to fade the pain from Jodie's life?

Dark Portal

Dark Portal is about a group of school aged mice that are lured behind that face of an ancient grill that they've been warned about since before they can remember. once through, their lives are in terrible constant danger. With rats and all manner of other creatures out to make a meal of them. but they stumble onto something much bigger than themselves and end up responsible for saving everyone they know because not a soul would believe them about the dangers down below, even if they could admit to going down in the first place
Dark Portal was actually an extremely interesting book. You would think that since the main characters are animals that the book would be childish but it wasn't. Also, the complicated additives of religion, and prejudice between the social classes are very interesting and somewhat ironic given that the main characters are animals.

You will absolutely love this book and the first one Tears of a Tiger. There are themes of hardship and abuse and how hard it is to live in that type of place for so long. -posted by Elena Key

Candy

Candy is the story of a teenage boy who finds himself infatuated, borderline obsessed with a heroin addicted prostitute named candy. She seems to like him to and they spend some time together until it angers Candy's pimp. Candy tells Joe to stay away for his own good but he simply can't do it. He tracks her down to her house, but her pimp finds them there and is going to kill Joe and punish Candy for not listening to him. i wont give away the end but it's a good one.Personally i liked this book. It's got the kind of suspense that it's hard to capture in the written word. And great thought flow. And Candy herself is a very well developed character; you can understand how she ended up in this situation even though the situation itself is larger-than-life. Very easy to relate to.

A Child Called It

i read the book a child called it and it is a really good book. it is about this little boy getting abused by his mother. she was really bad she made him sleep in the garage, wear dirty clothes, she would lock him in the bathroom and mix chemicals together and make him breathe it in. he would go to school stinking because he wasnt aloud to take a bath, she wouldnt feed him right she would only give him leftovers from everyone elses plate that they didnt eat. she was really mean to him one of the actions he almost died from it. she made him lay on the hot stove and whem the baby pooped she would make him eat the dirty diaper. this is journal and a book review.

The year is 1964, and Greene and his friends spend their summers crusing the town of Bexly, OH and listening to the Beatles. Anyone who is, or was ever in high school should read this book. Not only does it provide the insight to a young teen's mind, it also relates to events that affect almost any highschooler. Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer- Amanda Knotts

This was a great book, however, I'm not sure how much I liked the ending (which was the typical "happily ever after"). It slightly bored me, though I still enjoyed the whole book. There was no physical combat between the Cullen's and the Volturi, and few vampires died, leaving the story with hardly any drama toward the end. So the 4th book in the Twilight Saga didn't impress me much, but I adored the whole Saga. I would recommend this book to anyone who has started the Saga and is on the third book, Eclipse.

Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer- Amanda Knotts

In the third book in the Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer, Bella struggles to decide who she loves more (Edward or Jacob) while an enraged vampire hunts her. Victoria, the mate of the deceased James, wants Bella dead for revenge. She begins gathering a newborn vampire army, whose killings and movement awaken the Quileuet Tribe. The teenage boys, decendants of the first Quileuet chiefs, begin transforming into "werewolves", the natural enemy of vampires. The only way to beat Victoria is for the Cullen family and the werewolves to fight together. This was a great book and I would reccomend it to anyone. I'll let you see how it ends.

Experiences he went through made him stronger and helped him grow up quicker so he could support himself. Read this book and watch how Dave grows into a young man. - Kasey Turner

A Man Named Dave by Dave Pelzer

This is the third and final book of this intriguing series. It is a perfect example of how negative life experiences make you stronger. In this book you see how Dave becomes and strong man in the military, husband, and father. He still has to endure his mothers evil tortures and stalkings. Dave deals with a lot of money issues while he tries to support a woman he isnt sure he even loves and his son. "How I Paid For College by Marc Acito"

How I Paid For College was a hilariously written book. The main character Edward is a theater student growing up in a small New Jersey town in the year of 1984. Edward auditions for a sport at the most prestige acting school in the country, Julliard. To his own disbelief he snags a spot in the upcoming semester for his freshmen year of college. Edward's father refuses to pay for the school because he does not believe that acting is an acceptable career for a young gentlemen. Together Edward and his best friends launch a plan involving theft, imbezzelment, and trickery as they attempt to steal the tuition of 10, 000 from Edward's own father. The bonded friendships that they form throughout the journey is indescribable . This book was entertaining and very fun to read.

National Velvet by Enid Bagnold-----Jenny Robinson

National Velvet is a story of a little girl who loves horses. Their family helper, Mi tells her all kinds of stories of The Grand National. Velvet ends up inheriting some horses and wins a piebald from a fair. Velvet puts them in the local gymkhana to have fun and do small racing. Velvet does well but the Piebald didn't. Eventually Velvet and Mi enter the Piebald in The Grand National. The book was pretty boring most of the way through until you got to the race. However it's still a good book and I think a young age group of horse lovers would love it. I thought it was just okay.

Boy Toy by Barry Lyga-- Jenny Robinson

Boy Toy is a really good book. I could'nt put the book down. Josh throughout the book talks of these "flickers'' that he has. When he flickers the words are italicized and you can sense that something has happened to him. Later he reveals to his best friend that he hasn't spoken to in 5 years because of a certain incident. Wow was it shocking to hear. Read Boy Toy you wont be disappointed.

Awakening

This book is one of suspense. The main character is a young girl who is very, very confused about who she is. She lost her memory in some kind of accident that she doesnt remember. The beginning of the book takes place in a mental hospital until her apparent mother shows up to get her. It is a long journey about finding out who she is, or who she is led to believe she is. It is part of a series, which honestly i probably won't continue reading.

Fluke by Moore

Fluke is an exciting novel about the dynamics of whale speech. Christopher more does a very good job in combining information about the wildlife, with humor. The main character Nate is a marine biologist who specializes in the study of whales. His quest to determine the reasoning behind their singling lands him in the midst of an incredible discovery, along with a threat to the human race. This book kept me reading till the very end and I think that it is Christopher Moore at his best. This novel is a must read.

Anyone driven by their love for music needs to read this book. I found this book very enjoyable. I even found myself relating to the characters and laughing out loud. Thwonk by Joan Bauer--Nicole Webster

Thwonk is a very cute book. I think at a point in time, every girl wishes she could have a cupid. A. J. is an average looking girl who loves photgraphy but can't seem to find (and keep) a guy. Peter is the most popular guy in school, and A. J. wants him, BAD. Next thing she knows, Cupid comes along and casts a spell to make Peter fall in love with her. Is it really what she wanted after all? Thwonk is a great book for young women.

Summer Boys by Hailey Abbott--Nicole Webster

This book is about a bunch of teens who go to the beach for the summer every year. Jamie is in love with a boy who is not-so-sure about her. Ella falls for a boy who is the lead singer of a band, who she later finds out is dating her sister! Beth falls in love with her bestfriend. Summer Boys is about making out, hooking up and breaking up. I think this book is great for teenage girls, it's so real!

A Perfect Nightmare by John Saul--Nicole Webster

A family of three is selling their house to move closer to the father's work. Lindsey, the daughter, does not want to move. One night, Lindsey's parents come home and find out Lindsey had been kidnapped. A friend of the family, Patrick, had recently lost his family in a fire and knows how it feels to lose someone. He offers a reward to anyone who can help with the finding of Lindsey. The man who kidnapped Lindsey also kidnapped another teenage girl and an older woman. It's like he's trying to form his own family in a very creepy way. Lindsey's mother is determined to find her daughter. Will she find her? The ending of this book is definitely not what I expected. I believe A Perfect Nightmare was an excellent read and would advise others to read it.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

The novel Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist is one of the best books I have ever read especially being a teenager. It portrays the modern coming of age teenage rock junkie who love’s music and to “party”. It’s a love story you don’t want to end. Nick is in band, he’s handsome, and he just got his heart broken by his ex girlfriend Tris. Norah is described as a plain, goody good type who loves punk rock music and is always looking out for her best friend Caroline.

They meet at a concert that Nick’s band was also playing in. When Nick sees’s Tris with another guy he decides to ask Norah to be his girlfriend for 5 minutes. He then pulls her in and starts making out with her, right in front of Tris. They become very attracted to each other and the kiss they shared isn’t the last of them. Nick’s friend offers to take Caroline home and tells Norah to show his friend Nick a good time in the city of Manhattan. They spend their night on the town where they go to a strip club, eat at some diner, walk around the city of Manhattan at night, and watching the Sunrise together.

Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist is a great book for teenagers, there is a lot of cursing but it’s all to portray a modern age teenage boy and girl falling in love. You will not be disappointed if read this novel, it’s potentially in my opinion one of the best young adult fiction novels out there.

Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer --Nicole Webster

Breaking Dawn is the sequel to Eclipse, and the last book to the Twilight series. I didn't think this book was as good as the other books in this series. Bella gets married to Edward, the man of her dreams. During their honeymoon, Bella gets pregnant. Will the baby be human or vampire? Will Bella live through the pregnancy? I recommend reading this book only if you have read the rest of the Twilight series.

Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer --Nicole Webster

Eclipse is the sequel to New Moon. This novel is fantastic, and I'm sure if you read it, you will love it. Eclipse had me on the edge of my seat, wondering what twist would be next in this fantasy world. Bella gets stuck in the middle of this crazy love triangle and doesn't know how to get out. She loves two men. Who will she choose?

New Moon by Stephenie Meyer --Nicole Webster

New Moon is a great book for teenagers. It is the sequel to Twilight, a story of a young woman named Bella Swan who moves to the little town of Forks to live with her father. Next thing she knows, she falls in love with Edward, who she later finds out is a vampire. In New Moon, Bella starts hanging out with a friend of the family, named Jacob. Jacob is sweet and caring to Bella. Just as Bella gets close to Jacob, he starts pulling away. Is there something about him she should know about? I was pretty mad about half of the book. There is a twist that I did not expect. That really got me into this book. I would definitely advise other teens to read New Moon.

Speak by Lauire Halse Anderson Kassandra Turner

I think everybody in this school has read this book except me so i thought i would check it out. I'm very glad I did. This book is the perfect example of your typical high school and high school cliques. From the beginning I knew something happened to Melinda. Not until she totally revealed what had happened did I know exactly what happened. I find myself wanting to jump through the pages to take care of the the "beast" myself for making Melinda so lonely. I finished this book in about 3 days because i couldn't put it down. You will probably find yourself doing the same.

The Pact by Jodi Picoult Kassandra Turner

The blame is placed on Chris for Emily's death by everyone in town. The neighbor, Bernadette has been taking care of the two of them since they arrived to the building. Neither Heidi nor mother know anything about mother. The book is about Heidi's travel to Liberty, New York and what she has been longing to discover.

Greg Galloway, As Simple As Snow Summer Gollar

As Simple As Snow should in no way be considered a "simple" book. This novel is an exciting and suspenseful documentry of a highschool relationship that comes to a tragic end. The main character falls in love with a strange, non-conformist gothic girl, Anna. Anna mysteriously dissapears and the narrator reflects back on the the past five months of their relationship, looking for clues that may lead to her wearabouts. The book kept me turning page after page. I even finished it in two days! It was that good. I recommend this book to readers intrested in mystery, crime and suspense novels. Greg Galloway did an exceptional job in detailing the experience of love, tragedy, and loss.

A.M. Jenkins, Repossessed Summer Gollar

Repossessed by A.M Jenkins is a clever and hilariously written novel. That dark humor mixed with teen angst creates a very enjoyable plot. One day a demon simply decides that he does not wish to pertake in satanic acts anymore. He inhabits the body of a middle class American teenager. The lessons that he learns and the effect he has on others around him are played out in a very humerous way. This book kept me reading frantically and wanting to find out more and more. This book is great for a good laugh

J.K. Rowling, The Tales Of Beedle The Bard Summer Gollar

The tales of Beedle the Bard is a series of short stories written for wizard lovers, and Harry Potter fans. These heartwarming tales contain life lessons and have been told amongst the wizarding community for quite some time. The stories are entertaining and filled with humor, love, terror, and excitement. I found the commentary by Albus Dumbledore to be extremely interesting. If you love Harry Potter then you will love this book. It brings back all the magic from the series, and proves once again that J.K. Rowling is an exceptional writer.

A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer

This book is a pretty popular one on the shelves. Its all about child abuse and the life of a young boy as he lives through it. It is a very grusome, heartbreaking story about how horrible "The boy's" mother treats him and how he stuggles for enough food to survive. He is banned from anything his family does and is treated as a slave around the house. This is the first book of a trilogy. I cant wait to read the rest.

Seabiscuit An American Legend

Seabiscuit is an amazing book. Much better than the movie. You get to know more about the horse, his jockey, his owners and trainers. The book leads you through many if not all of Seabiscuits races. It was well worth the all the reading. I highly reccommend reading this book if you love horses or horse racing.

Nick and Norahs Infinite Playlist. Jenny Robinson

Wow, what a book. This book is amazing. It is told from Nick and Norah. Its 20 chapters long and is all based on one nights happenings. The characters meet at a club one night both hiding and hurt from their exes. Nick's ex is coming up to him and he sees Norah. He quickly asks Norah is she'll be his girlfriend for the next 5 min and she answers him with a kiss. They hook up and spend the rest of the wild night together. I couldnt put the book down, I cant wait to go out and find the movie. This is truly a great book!

Guardian by Julius Lester

The Guardian is about racist times. The preachers daughter in a small town is raped and murdered. The witness was a black man and he is blamed for the crime. The witness is hung from the tree and Ansel, the main character, knows it wasnt him. He wants to get away from the awful guilty he feels just being in the same town. It difficult being young and expected to run his fathers store. You will see how he deals with the truth that is eating up his heart.

StarGirl by Jerry Spinelli

This is a book about how to stand out from the crowd. StarGirl is the new girl in school and isnt like anybody in the small town in Arizona. Things have always been the same, until StarGirl came. You will see how she learns to share her happiness and uniquness and then how she is shunned from the other students. Of coarse there is a love story involved and goes into detail about how hard it is to love somebody when nobody else does.

Book Review: Melody Carlson, Finding Alice Summer Gollar

Finding Alice by Melody Carlson is an exceptional book. Your main character Alice is a college student that has lived a repressive life in a Christian household. Shortly after her senior year of college Alice starts to develop irrational fears, hearing voices, and witnessing visions. Alice believes that these visons and voices are the work of a guardian angel. Soon her faith is tested when she starts to lose grip and control on her life. Alice is diagnosed with schzephrenia and is institutionalized at a horrible clinic. She breaks free and begins her journey to find herself. Finding Alice is in a way a heroic tale of a young girl caught in a world that is beyond control. Carlson's details are so vived and realistic that you find yourself questioning your sanity. This is a must read.

The Pact Megan Ritter

The Pact is another compelling story written by Jodi Picoult that has incredible influence on the lives of any average American teenager. The two main characters, Chris and Emily, have known each other their entire lives. They've gone from inseperable friends to inseperable lovers. Their love is so strong that they're willing to do anything to make each other happy. And I mean anything. The story has many very unexpected turns and twists that keep you on the edge of your seat constantly asking questions; was it suicide or was it murder?

Nick and Norah by Amanda Lukas

*Takes a long breathe* I know that most of you who would visit this site just LOVE Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. Well... I don't. It's a refreshing book, really. The characters aren't trite and its honest to how the "other" teenage side, the ones who aren't the popular ones, speak and think. However, I find it still to be trite. When I read, I started to dislike both Norah and Nick. I wanted to grab Nick by shirt collar and scream, "SUCK IT UP ALREADY!! SHE DUMPED YOU, AND YOU ARE LUCKY!!! SHE IS A HUSSY! GET OVER HER!" And Norah.... well, she is all "Woe is me" but it a hip, non-whiny way. It's annoying. The writing is good. The writing is honest, but in its honesty, I find myself hating both Nick and Norah and their taste in music.

Throughout his journey of being bullied, he lost his best and only friend, Josie Cormier. After he's had enough, he makes a turn for the worst and in nineteen minutes changes the lives of so many people. It's a story of courage and strength and the effects bullying can have on an innocent child. The entire book keeps you intruiged always wanting more, making it nearly impossible to put down.

So. B. It by Megan Ritter

So B. It (written by Sarah Weeks); not only is it the title of the book, but also the name of the bum-brain mother in this story. Heidi, a child who lives with her bum-brain mother and her agoraphobic neighbor, is the main character of the story. Throughout the book, she overcomes many obstacles that most children have no connection with. Heidi wants answers for why and how her life became what it is now. She sets off on her own on a journey to find her answers. It's a very suspenseful journey and helps Heidi realize she has everything she needs to know right there at home with her mama and Bernadette, the neighbor.
